Reblog from Medium: Think you’re not funny? Neither was I, until this show helped me wrangle my inner comedienne

Spoiler: You might have to wear ridiculous pants.

Hi, my name is Emilie, and I’m not a funny person.
See, there are funny people and there are those of us who are surrounded BY funny people.

We, the unfunny, we have other qualities. Smart, maybe. Amusing and good conversationalists, check and check. Most of us learn very early to be connoisseurs of punchlines, and we are excellent straight-men. But somehow, we are still the ones whose jokes at the party are much funnier when someone else delivers them… 30 seconds later and more loudly. And most of the time, we don’t mind our perpetual unfunniness. Because we like funny, and we seek out the funny people, and frankly — like everyone else, funny or un — we also just love to laugh.

BUT WHAT IF…

What if we, the comedically stunted, DISCOVERED our funny? Think about it. What if you got the chance to test drive funny like a shiny new Camaro, for a day, a week? Could you uncover something uniquely you, deep in your unfunny being you had forgotten or discounted or just flat-out ignored? Could you mine some unknown internal wealth of funny for actual… LAUGHS?

I say you can, unfunny friends. I say we all can.

“Baby, It’s Dead Outside:” Duets on dead.fm

Merry Christmas, Everyone!
For a little nontraditional cheer, I sang you this silly parody of a holiday favorite!
(Click the image below to listen, and find me at 11:58)

NOTE: The song, while rampant with zombies, is totally clean and in-law/coworker friendly!
The rest of the podcast however, ought to be noted as “Not Safe for Work or Family Gatherings.” Just saying.

20141228-deadfmThis little ditty is a bang-up collaboration: Actor and crooner extraordinaire Matt Shimkus (yes, also my handsome husband) joined me on vocals with his dulcet tones, piano accompaniment by Ben Dobyns of Zombie Orpheus Entertainment, and original lyrics by Jimmy McMichael of the Dead Gentlemen (he who pens the story to the Demon Hunters weekly webcomic, among other things).

Like I said, it’s a delightful little romantic tune on how to weather the impending holiday/zombie apocalypse. And there are tasty rhymes like…

(My sister will be suspicious) I don’t want to seem malicious
(My brother will be there at the door) But your family wasn’t ready for war
(My maiden aunt’s mind is vicious) And human flesh is nutritious
(But maybe just a cigarette more) For resurrected anthropovores

Plus there are all kinds of other thoroughly irreverent, holiday-inspired things, like “Do you want to be a Bro, Man?” and “The Night Before Christmas as told by the Purple Ninja.”

Give it a listen! Enjoy!

BTS Video: “Curses!” Photoshoot with Espionage Cosmetics

Check out this episode of “Behind the Glitter” with Espionage Cosmetics, purveyors of #nerdmakeup and the masterminds behind the “Curses!” body glitter photoshoot.

BTG-Curses-Pic

Watch the Curses! BTG Video!

I blogged about the photoshoot a few months back, with several of my own BTS pics, but somehow I missed the finished video! There are, of course, lots of BTS shenanigans, which is always fun, but also some neat sneak peeks into how the “glitter shirts” were applied (lots of glue) and interviews with the ever-amazing head of Espionage Cosmetics, Jamie Cordero (aka, @TheGlitterJedi). You also see me eating things and giggling and making silly poses while covered in glitter… in other words, an intimate look at my everyday life.

Espionage is currently en route to San Diego Comic Con, where they are going to be incredibly busy and important. Keep your eyes open for their big announcement coming soon!
